there was an eclipse or something that night. i forget the details... but apparently word was out ahead of time that PHIL really wanted to play DS in honor of the eclipse or whatever. i listened to it once.... it is more exciting as an Encore than it is a very interesting version of the song. it is just sort of a polite noodle.

agreed. it's not a very good version. probably one of my all-time least favorites.

I was there - full moon Friday the 13th. Shooting star shot across the sky right before they went into Dark Star. To be honest, I don't remember much of the actual song other than Phil's opening notes - that was enough to send thousands of us into instant ecstasy. Hampton in '89 was better, but Greek '84 was a bigger thrill (at least for me). Only 2 I caught and neither one do I ever really listen to - although I do like to put on the scarlet-touch-fire from time to time to relive the night. I really enjoyed the second set that Sunday and Ventura the next weekend was good time as well....
